Meet Davie Smith, our Minibus Driver

September 16, 2022

How long have you worked at Camphill School Aberdeen?

I have worked at Camphill for around six years.

What brought you to Camphill School Aberdeen?

I worked in the energy sector for years, and the job opportunity at Camphill came up, it was just the perfect job for me.

What does your role at Camphill School Aberdeen consist of?

I am Camphill’s mini bus driver. I pick up staff first thing in the morning, then go on to pick up our young people and children. Then, throughout the day, I’ll take our Learning for Life students back and forth to their workshops. When I have a spare moment in the day, I’ll also do odd jobs like going to the post office or picking up furniture, basically anything that needs done, I will do! I am also responsible for ensuring the maintenance of the vans and cars on the estate.

Are there any key highlights that stand out for you during your time at Camphill School Aberdeen?

This summer we have had lots of school trips to beaches, lochs and Munros! The weather has been great and we’ve made such fantastic memories, I think that this summer is definitely a key highlight.

Getting to know the students is such a lovely part of my job, they are really inspiring and I get a lot of happiness from working here. For example, one young man will shout ‘Up the Dons’ at me most days as he knows I am a big Aberdeen supporter, little things like that make me smile every day.

Another highlight would be that last month, I was shortlisted for ‘Staff Member of The Year’ for the Celebrate Aberdeen Awards! I was honestly so surprised to even be nominated, I thought it was a joke at first but then I saw it on the P&J’s website. It really is such an honour and I am really looking forward to Saturday!

How much of a difference will the capital appeal campaign when complete make to students and their families at Camphill School Aberdeen?

The appeal will make a huge difference for the students and their families at Camphill School Aberdeen. Being able to open the doors to even more children and young people, so that they can access the wonderful services at Camphill. I see the difference that Camphill’s unique approach to learning makes to students every day and I look forward to when the build begins!
