Meet Martin Alfred, our Safety, Community and Management Support Officer

April 27, 2022

Continuing our 'Meet the Team' series, we sat down for a chat with our Safety, Community and Management Support Officer, Martin Alfred.

How long have you worked at Camphill School Aberdeen?

I have worked at Camphill School Aberdeen since 2010. Initially, I worked as a senior carer in one of the houses and over the years took on more responsibility eventually becoming a Registered Manager for Cairnlee House, one of the residential care services. I also spent some years developing the day services for young adults programme. During my time at Camphill School Aberdeen, I have lived on all three campuses and worked in all of the services.

What brought you to Camphill School Aberdeen?

I was born and grew up in Camphill before heading to California to be part of the organisation called Sophia Project, which supported families at risk of reoccurring homelessness through providing family support, day care, before and after school programmes and respite. During my time there I began to study through the Camphill Academy in North America. I had the opportunity to conclude my studies in North America or Aberdeen and chose to come back to Camphill School Aberdeen because I saw fantastic potential.

What is your role at Camphill School Aberdeen?

I am the Safety, Community and Management Support Officer. This role covers Health and Safety and GDPR (data protection) support and advice across all of the services including community liaison and development, and supporting the Senior Management team. This means that every day has a new and exciting challenge, and I end up being involved in a whole variety of things. I really love what I do and enjoy that I am able to help and support so many people.

Are there any key highlights that stand out for you during your time at Camphill School Aberdeen?

I would say my key highlights are the refurbishment of Cairnlee House, helping to expand the day services to a full-time provision and making the transition to my current role as Safety, Community and Management Support Officer.

How much of a difference will the capital appeal campaign when complete make to students and their families at Camphill School Aberdeen?

Having more facilities will enable us to support a larger number of children and young people and their families in the North East that need specialised care due to their complex support needs. It will make a huge difference to have specially designed and built facilities that can meet the current and future needs of children and young people.
