Our ‘Meet the Team’ series aims to highlight the exceptional staff and volunteers who work hard to make Camphill School Aberdeen the wonderful place that it is. Next up in our ‘Meet the Team’ series is Lim Ravensbergen, House Coordinator on Camphill Estate.
What is your role at Camphill School Aberdeen and what does it consist of?
I’m a House Coordinator in Witiko House on Camphill Estate.
My role involves looking after the five young people living in the house, liaising with internal and external individuals, ensuring the wellbeing of other staff in the house, finance, admin, and overall just being warm and welcoming to everyone who comes through the door of Witiko House.
How did you first hear of the role and Camphill School Aberdeen?
I first heard of the Camphill movement while I was studying social work at university in the Netherlands. As part of the course, I went on placement to a Camphill community in Wales. Then, after completing university, a friend I met while in Wales invited me over to a Camphill community in California. From there, I came to Camphill School Aberdeen as I’d always wanted to visit Scotland!
How long have you worked at Camphill School Aberdeen?
I’ve worked at Camphill School Aberdeen for around 8 years. I started here in 2016 as a volunteer, then worked as a Senior, and then as an Assistant House Coordinator before starting my current role in August 2023.
I believe that what’s kept me here so long is that the quality of care is so high at Camphill School Aberdeen. I’m passionate about providing care and so is everyone else here – that’s what makes it so special.
Are there any highlights that stand out to you during your time at Camphill School Aberdeen?
The biggest highlight of working here is seeing the impact our work has on the children and young people. It’s a gift to be able to provide them with the chance to develop and learn in ways that wouldn’t be possible in other mainstream education and care settings.
I also really enjoy Christmas and all the community celebrations that happen during this time of year. There’s always such a warm and happy energy - I’d never experienced a Christmas like it until my first year here.
How much difference will our fully inclusive outdoor adventure playground make to children, young people and the wider community when it opens?
The sensory playpark is going to be a great facility for our young people to use their imaginations, express themselves, and immerse themselves in play. A lot of the young people I work with enjoy spending time outdoors so the playpark will have both mental and physical benefits. It’ll also allow young people to play how they like, which is not always possible in public parks.
When not at work, how do you enjoy spending your time?
When I’m not working, I enjoy listening to music and audiobooks, spending time with friends, and going out for dinner. I also enjoy taking part in the cultural festivals that the Camphill movement celebrates. They’re always a great opportunity to gather with the wider community.
